Mom and Dad at Falling Water

Mom and Dad at Falling Water

We all have those “OMG!” moments when we hear our parents in something we say or see them in something we do. Tonight, I had a multi-generational moment like that.  It doesn’t bother me that these things happen.  Dad and I both got a chuckle out of it.

Dad and I are both diabetic.  He takes insulin for his.  He doesn’t always eat the way he should.  One of his downfalls is Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake.  He’s been known to eat the whole cake himself over a few nights. He knows the folks at Hermitage DQ, so he occasionally gets discounts when they have one that doesn’t come out right.

He especially likes the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard Cakes.  Pumpkin Pie is a seasonal flavor around Thanksgiving.  I tease him about eating too much sugar because that’s the only way to do it without him getting grumpy.  He had them make him a Pumpkin Pie Cake just before the season ended.

He has been hinting the last few nights about cutting the cake.  I’ve steered clear of the hints.  We’ve both been ‘blessed’ with too many cookies and other sweets over the holidays.  Tonight, after dinner, he said “Well… If you want ice cream cake, its in the freezer.”  This time I called him on it.  “Is that a hint?”  He smiled and said, “Art wants some ice cream.”  We had a chuckle as I got the cake out of the freezer.

Let me explain.  My Grandfather, Dad’s dad, had this way of asking for ice cream.  He would say to my Mom, “If you’d like some ice cream, there’s some in the freezer.”  Mom would say something back to him like “Do you want some ice cream?”  He would decline until you got the ice cream out of the freezer, then it became “Well, I guess I could have some.”  That was Grandpa’s way of hinting.  His name was Art.  Short for Arthur.

Tonight Art got his ice cream cake.
